Literacy team ZOOMS ahead with instruction!
Isolation and uncertainty are commonplace these days, and add to the challenge for those working to learn new literacy and language skills. Many adult learners are especially impacted, as they too navigate the transition to virtual learning. The Literacy staff are making most of the current classes and individual tutoring programs virtual, and in response have added support opportunities to continue the close relationships staff and learners build in person.
"The students were concerned about us, and each other, and had questions about what was happening in the community," says Susanne Crichton, Literacy Specialist. "We now have semiweekly Zoom check-ins every Monday and Friday with different students attending on different days," Between 7 and 10 adults participate in each meeting, and the numbers are growing.
The Literacy Team has also started online education for computer literacy skills, and preparations for the US Citizenship exam. The Literacy team is offering mock interviews via Zoom, and over the phone. More than 25 active Citizenship students have been contacted, and 7 have upcoming interviews that will be delayed because of the crisis. New students can access online resources and participate in a virtual orientation to get started. Students who need extra support, can get one-on-one support.
