Library Literacy Tutor Celebrated by United Way
This month we congratulate one of our super-tutors, Maria Berrospe, who received the Champion for Asset Building award from United Way of Monterey County.
Maria first participated in the Salinas Public Library's Literacy Program Citizenship classes as a student, and after receiving citizenship herself, made a commitment to help others. "Maria volunteers with passion and commitment," says Margarita Medina-Romero, Literacy Assistant. "She's had a big impact on recruiting new students and is constantly making suggestions to improve our program to support our Spanish speaking students." Citizenship groups have not been deterred by the Shelter in Place order and continue to meet weekly online. Click here to sign up or learn more.
Maria Berrospe was one of 40 volunteers recognized this year by the United Way's prestigious "2020 Live United Awards," and one of only six given the Championship award. The annual program honors the outstanding volunteers who give back to their community throughout the previous year. While United Way couldn't host an annual gala this year, plans are underway to celebrate in person next year.
