Demystifying computer hardware is all part of the equation for many adult learners in our computer literacy program, and our Family Computer Day provided lots of opportunity for learning. Youth and family members were able to sit side-by-side and literally take things apart, while learning about all the hardware components that make up a laptop. The half-day workshop, which was conducted by Loaves, Fishes and Computers, was open to the public and included instruction on Internet safety, recommendations for parental monitoring of their children's computer use, and basics on how to use a computer. At the end of the workshop, 24 families were able to take home their own refurbished Chromebook.

Loaves, Fishes & Computers has hosted 16 Family Computer Workshops in the County, with over 160 families participating. "The workshops attempt to set up a solid and healthy foundation for a parent to monitor their child's computer usage, as well as encouraging them to take more in-depth computer classes offered by the Salinas Public Library, Loaves, Fishes & Computers, or any other agency," says Christian Mendelson, Founder and Executive Director.

Our free Basic Computer Literacy classes will resume in August. Classes meet twice a week for 10 weeks, and are geared to help adults with little or no previous computer experience.
