40 Years of Literacy at Salinas Public Library
Forty years ago, the California State Library launched the California Library Literacy Services (CLLS). With seed money from the state, 27 libraries ---including Salinas Public Library--were awarded grants to bring Adult Literacy programming to their communities. This was the first statewide initiative in the country to recognize Literacy as a core library service. Now, there are 106 programs providing tutoring services at 635 branches across California.
Over the past four decades, CLLS funding has empowered more than 500,000 adults and their families, recognizing that literacy in its many forms—whether reading a newspaper, managing finances, applying for jobs online, or confidently communicating with a child's teacher—has the power to change lives.
Earlier this month, the City of Salinas proclaimed October as Literacy Month and presented a Proclamation to Library staff, honoring four decades of Adult and Family Literacy programming in our community. Literacy staff celebrated with a display at John Steinbeck Library and presented books to everyone who stopped by to find out more about our programs and services.
