In her memoir My Journey to a New World, Bitisho Mawazo shares her riveting story of survival and unyielding determination.

She recounts her challenging childhood in South Kivu, the upheaval of the 1996 civil unrest, and her family’s daring escape to Tanzania. After fleeing her country, the Democratic Republic of Congo with her husband, infant son, and her niece, the family was sent to live in a United Nations refugee camp. After three years living in the camp, the United States government approved the family’s immigration to the United States.

In August of 2000, the family arrived in Oakland California with the clothes on their backs, and $100. In October of 2004, they moved to Salinas California where Bitisho became a paraeducator working with disabled children. She and her husband became U. S. Citizens in 2005. Through incredible determination, grit, and strength of character, Bitisho built a new life with her husband and family, which is evident throughout her true story.

My Journey to a New World highlights the power of the human spirit and offers a profound reflection on hope and perseverance amidst adversity. Learn more about My Journey to a New World at Bitisho Mawazo's in person Local Author Talk.
