COMPUTER CLASSES OFF TO A GREAT START
The Literacy Program's free computer classes resumed this August with their first hybrid Orientation. Over 60 attendees joined in person or online to find out more about the different classes and to get signed up. This session, participants chose from: Computing for Beginners, Beyond Basics, Intermediate Blended, or Advanced Self-Directed classes. The range of classes are designed to reflect different needs in the community:
"In the Beginning level we focus on basic skills and terminology. Our visual guides and references help demystify technology and build confidence in our participants,” said Susanne Crichton, Literacy Specialist.
Margarita Medina, Literacy Assistant, added, “In the Advanced class we work collaboratively on real-world projects that integrate commonly used applications, like spreadsheets. It can be a challenge to keep up with changes in the workplace and we want our participants to gain the skills and the confidence they need to keep up."
A big change this session is the debut of the Literacy Program's first blended, or hybrid class. Participants can attend the Intermediate class in person at El Gabilan Library, or they can participate in the class online. Funding from the California Library Literacy Services has allowed the program to purchase Owl technology to facilitate this hybrid model of teaching. If successful, the same model may be extended to other classes in the future.
A common barrier to digital literacy is lack of access to appropriate devices at home. State Library grants funded the purchase of Chromebook laptop computers and internet Hot Spots which participants can borrow for the duration of the classes. Last year, 136 Chromebooks and 40 Hot Spots were loaned to class members to keep practicing between classes.
While classes are full this session, the 10-week program will roll out again in October. To find out more, check out the class descriptions on the Salinas Public Library website, or contact the Literacy Program for information and to be added to the waitlist: (831) 758-7929
