Family Reading Circle Participants ignite their own Kindle Fires!
Cesar Chavez was the site for our recent Family Reading Circle, a program that brought 18 adults and 33 children together to learn how to effectively bring reading and literacy into the home, and help build home libraries.
The program concluded with a special 3-hour training on how to use the Kindle Fire to access free materials for downloading, how to set up parental controls, and how to reinforce effective practices for screen-time for their children. Adults who completed the 5-week program received a Kindle Fire to take home and use for downloading e-books and other materials.
The Family Reading Circle was made possible through a grant from the California State Library Literacy Services. It also included introducing participants to various book kits from Playaway, a portable media player that contains audiobooks for children. The collection that was also purchased through these grant funds will be available to the community at large later in the year.
