For the last five weeks, we have been celebrating all things Early Childhood Literacy in our Family Reading Circle. The program runs for five weeks around four weekly themes: Home ComfortsSeasons & CyclesOcean Warriors and Summer Adventures. As children engage in fun activities related to each theme, caregivers engage in discussion and share ideas around fostering a love of reading and learning in the home.

This session, we were lucky enough to be joined for in-class visits by Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History and environmental advocacy group Save our Shores. Both prepared engaging presentations for our families and gave information on their programs and services. We also enjoyed a virtual read-aloud with acclaimed children's author and activist, Meeg Pincus, who read her wonderful book, Ocean Soup (check it out today!)

In addition to weekly classes, participants have access to a dedicated Google Classroom packed with information, resources and activities. Families can access the classroom 24/7 and are able to leave comments and engage in collaborative discussions around the resources:

"This hand out “How to beat the summer slide” is a great daily reminder. I printed it and refer to it when we have down time so we can use our free time meaningfully." - Sandra, FRC participant

All materials are presented in English and Spanish and families take home all the supplies and materials they need to complete crafts and activities. Books are our first love, so each week families take home two books to build their home libraries. And no Literacy program is complete without a celebration! This session we went all out with a Carnival theme, treating ourselves to traditional snacks and games - many thanks to Monterey Zoo for providing the grand prize!
