The Salinas Public Library offers multiple services beyond its walls. These services include the KinderMobile, the Paletero Cart, and the Homebound Services Program.

The library's bookmobile was transitioned in 2017 into a new KinderMobile with a focus on making monthly visits to all of the public school kindergarten classrooms in Salinas. Our goal is to give children greater access to library books and materials, and we believe this investment of resources in our youngest clients has reaped many rewards, establishing life-long relationships with these students and their families. The KinderMobile is a full service library and we issue library cards to all kindergarten students at the start of the school year, and provide story time while making school visits.

Homebound Services Program

This program provides free delivery service of library materials for eligible residents of the City of Salinas who have limited mobility, due to temporary or permanent physical illness/impairment, and are physically unable to visit a Library facility. Before the first delivery, Homebound Program staff will discuss your reading, listening and viewing preferences in order to plan future selections. Monthly delivery schedule will be determined after the initial discussion.

A library card is required to receive this service. We will deliver books, magazines, music CDs, books on CD, and DVDs. The lending period for materials borrowed through this program is four (4) weeks with the ability to renew once if there are no holds on the material. There is no late fee for library materials borrowed through Homebound delivery however, users are responsible for any loss or damages to library materials.

Paletero Cart and Electronic Bike

While Paletero means ice-cream, to the staff at Salinas Public Library it stands for: Providing, Access, Literacy and Education Through Engaging Residents Outside Library Walls.

The Salinas Public Library strives to continually find innovative and community responsive methods to spread and grow learning throughout the entire community. The Paletero Program was designed to model the paletero, “ice cream man,” business practice where individually pushed carts sell ice cream, novelties and snacks. We have successfully replicated this popular method, but instead of selling ice cream, it lends tablets and books from its Paletero cart. It also offers new library cards and provides hotspots for internet access. Additionally, staff inform community members about library programs and help answer reference questions.

If you would like to inquire about having the Paletero Cart or Electronic Bike and its staff attend a special event, please contact Ernesto Lizaola, Community Education Manager at (831) 758-7345.
