Set on a plantation during the time of slavery, this lyrical historical fiction novel revolves around the forbidden love between two enslaved men, Isaiah and Samuel. When an older fellow slave begins to preach the master's gospel, their love is seen as a threat to the plantation’s order. As tensions build and the weight of centuries culminate in a climactic reckoning, “The Prophets” masterfully reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance, but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth, portraying the enormous, heroic power of love.
