Yes, the summer flew by, but we kept the conversation about reading going. Here's a few highlights from our Summer Learning Challenge:

  • 1544 youth signed up to log their reading, and over 600 met or exceeded the reading challenge.
  • 199 adults signed up, and 3 adults won Kindles at our Summer Learning Challenge Wrap-up Party.
  • More than 3500 children and adults attended a live performance or summer programs.

Whether you were interested in live theater, or seeing how big a bubble Mr. Bubbles could blow, we had live performances that were enjoyed by families and children alike. We also had thoughtful programs throughout the summer including a Stop-motion Animation Class, 3-D printing and virtual reality workshops, a Graphic Novel Book Club, field trip adventures, Reading the Stars, and much more. We also expanded our Kinder Boot Camp to a second elementary school. These 2-week camps are designed for children entering kindergarten who have had no prior experience in a Pre-K classroom, or child development center.

Thank you Salinas residents for supporting this year's Summer Learning Challenge!  Thank you Friends of the Salinas Public Library for providing new books that we were able to give away as rewards and incentives, and special thanks to Dollar General for their grant in support of summer reading programs.
